Defiant Provision
Have you ever had one moment completely change your outlook?
Maybe it was a comment, a message, or something someone said that stuck with you longer than it should have.
We’ve all been there. One moment you feel confident, hopeful, and strong. The next moment you’re overwhelmed and wondering if you can keep going.
Surprisingly, one of the greatest prophets in the Bible experienced that same kind of moment.
In 1 Kings 18, Elijah stood on Mount Carmel and watched God send fire from heaven. It was an incredible display of God’s power.
But just one chapter later, everything changes.
After receiving a threatening message from Queen Jezebel, Elijah runs for his life and ends up alone in the wilderness. Sitting under a tree, he tells God he’s had enough.
“I can’t keep doing this.”
What’s fascinating about this moment is how God responds.
God doesn’t correct Elijah.
God doesn’t lecture Elijah.
God doesn’t shame Elijah.
Instead, God sends an angel with bread and water and lets him rest.
Before addressing Elijah’s thoughts, God restores Elijah’s strength.
Sometimes what feels like a spiritual crisis is actually exhaustion.
When we’re tired, everything feels heavier. Problems seem bigger. Criticism feels louder.
Hope feels distant.
But the story doesn’t end there.
After Elijah rests, God speaks to him—not through dramatic signs, but through a gentle whisper.
And then God reminds Elijah of something he had forgotten:
“You are not alone.”
Discouragement often whispers a lie: You’re the only one struggling.
But God tells Elijah there are thousands of others who remain faithful.
The truth is this: we were never meant to carry life alone.
If you feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or exhausted right now, take heart.
God still meets people under broom trees.
He still provides what we need.
And He still invites us to come to Him and find rest.
